Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does a Speech Pathologist do?
Think of us as your child’s communication coach! Speech Pathologists help with all things talking, listening and understanding, plus a few extras like feeding and swallowing. If it involves words or sounds, we’re on it!
  • How do I know if my child needs speech therapy?
If you’ve been wondering whether your child’s speech or language is developing as expected, or if you’ve noticed they’re having trouble with speech sounds, understanding language, social communication or feeding, it might be worth getting in touch. Common signs might be trouble pronouncing words, following directions or just having a tough time getting their thoughts across. Not sure if therapy is the next step? We’ve got you covered! We offer 30-minute Consultative Guidance Calls. We chat with you, answer your burning questions and help you figure out the best way to support your child. Whether you’re on our waitlist or just trying to decide if therapy is right, a call could be a great solution.
  • At what age should I consider speech therapy for my child?
It's never too early for speech therapy. If something feels a little off, trust that parent instinct of yours. We can start working with kiddos from a super young age—early help makes a big difference!
  • Do I need a referral to see a Speech Pathologist?
No referral needed. You can book an appointment with us directly. However, if your GP has given you a Medicare plan, you may be eligible for some handy rebates to help cover the cost.
  • How much does speech therapy cost?
Costs can vary depending on the service. Head across to our Fees & Rebates page for our price information.
  • Can I book an initial consultation without a report?
Every initial consultation includes a summary report. This isn’t just paperwork; it’s a helpful document that outlines the assessments we’ve done, our observations as well as some goals and recommendations for your child’s therapy. It’s a great resource to have for teachers or other health professionals and it helps us track progress too.
  • Do you do formal assessments in the first session?
Generally, our first session is more of a ‘get to know you’ screening to see how your child is doing. If we notice something that needs a closer look, we might recommend a formal assessment for another day. That way, we can focus on the areas that matter most.
  • How long do speech therapy sessions last?
Our sessions are booked for an hour, but the therapy part usually takes about 45 minutes. The extra time lets us write session notes, prepare resources for home practice and send you a session summary. If you’d like, we can share these notes with your child’s teacher/educator too.
  • How do you measure progress?
We keep track of everything! We record your child’s progress in each session and check in with you regularly to review how they’re going with their therapy goals. It’s all about making sure we’re on the right track and celebrating those milestones together.
  • How long does my child need speech therapy?
It’s like asking how long a piece of string is. Every child is different—some make super speedy progress, while others might need a bit more time. We’ll work at your child’s pace, celebrating each little win along the way.
  • What happens during a speech therapy session?
Therapy sessions are all about fun and learning. We use play, activities and structured tasks to work on your child’s goals. At the end, we’ll chat with you about what we did, any progress we noticed and how you can continue supporting your child at home.
  • Can I stay in the room during my child’s session?
Absolutely! We encourage parents to be involved in their child's speech therapy. You’re welcome to stay and observe, join in on the activities or have a chat with us at the end of the session. Whatever makes you and your child feel most comfortable.
  • What if my child isn’t cooperative during the session?
No worries—this is completely normal. We’re experienced in working with all sorts of personalities and know how to make therapy engaging and fun. If your child isn’t up for it on a particular day, we’ll adapt the session to meet them where they’re at.
  • How can I help my child at home?
We’ll give you plenty of tips and activities to try at home based on what we’re working on in therapy. Consistency is key, so even small amounts of practice can make a big difference.
  • Do you offer telehealth sessions?
Yes, we do! Telehealth is a great option for families who prefer to do therapy from the comfort of home. It’s flexible, convenient and we can still provide effective, engaging sessions online.
  • What should I do if I need to cancel an appointment?
We understand that life happens! Just give us a call, SMS or send an email as soon as you can, preferably 2 clear business days before the appointment, so we can reschedule. This helps us offer the spot to another family who may be waiting.
