As a business owner, speech pathologist, and mum of two, flexibility isn’t just a perk—it’s a necessity. Today was my biggest workday of the week, but thanks to the way I’ve built my practice:

✅ I can start later & finish later to fit around my family.
✅ When things don’t go to plan (hello, traffic!), I have the flexibility to reschedule.
✅ I never expect my team to match my crazy schedule—I work hard so my team never has to work harder than me. 💛

Running a practice is busy, but it’s built to support the people in it—clients, families, and speechies alike.

This game gets big giggles in therapy, but it’s also packed with language learning opportunities! We use it to practice:
✔️ Prepositions (pull from his nose!)
✔️ Expanding sentences (describe what you picked! e.g., “I picked a long, stretchy booger!”)
✔️ Turn-taking & social skills (perfect for social communication)

Here are 5 things I learned in my child’s first week of prep:

1️⃣ Exhaustion is real 😴 – Prep is a huge adjustment, and by 3 PM, my little one is DONE. Big emotions, meltdowns, and extra cuddles have been the norm this week.

2️⃣ Storytelling skills are developing fast! 📖 – Even though details are a little scrambled, I’m noticing more storytelling attempts: “Mum, guess what happened at lunch?” Even if I only get half the story, I love hearing how they’re piecing it all together.

3️⃣ Lunchboxes come home… questionable 😂 – The sandwich? Barely touched. The snacks? Gone. I’m learning not to stress about the perfect lunch and just pack what actually gets eaten.

4️⃣ New words & phrases are popping up! 💬 – Prep is like a language explosion! I’ve heard new words, expressions, and even some mispronunciations as they pick up language from teachers and friends.

5️⃣ Independence is growing (even when I don’t feel ready for it!) 🎒 – My little one is already showing more independence—packing their own bag, remembering classroom routines, and even reminding me about things. It’s exciting and bittersweet all at once!

Here are 5 things I learned in my child’s first week of prep:

✨ 4x magic sand kits from @targetaus
✨ 1x 5L food container with lid for storage, also from Target
✨ speech sound minis but you could use anything!

It was as simple as dumping it all in the container and then having fun!

The ABS has established that 1.2 MILLION Australians have communication disability. Communication disability affects a person’s ability to understand and be understood by others.
